Focusing on the good stuff, Day Two. Or: Why not talk about Brent Lillibridge some more?

So, again, busy weekend at work = no time for Keleigh to watch the game yesterday.

But, I caught the highlights and the lowlights and read the recaps and I’m choosing to believe that there was some real good in there. Not enough, yet, but enough that I don’t have to wear my imaginoscope to find it.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a late-inning spurt of scoring and it was nice to see Adam Dunn finally come through in the clutch.

Also nice to see, was Brent Lillibridge making the most of a starting appearance. I mean we know that he can pull of near-[miracles] on defense. And, last night he reminded us that he can play offense, too. Not only does he have the highest OBP on the roster and only Juan Pierre has stolen more bases than he has (having played 11 more games), he’s hit 3 home runs this year.

Like [this one].

Focusing on the good, people. Focusing on the good.

Go, White Sox!

Winning streak ends at two. Or: The good and the bad, but nothing really ugly.

1. I still haven’t gotten over the events of yesterday. So, I am going to link to a video that contains both of the much hyped-about catches.
http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=14199891

His expressions (he knew exactly how perfectly-timed those plays were) and his excited fist-pump the second that he made the second catch were pretty awesome to watch. Way to make the most of your time in the game.

And, I am also going to link to a rather amusing article about someone hacking Lillibridge’s wikipedia page – which is how you know that you’ve “made it”. [click here]

Seriously, we have had so much late-inning drama in all of the games where we’ve actually been in contention to win, it was nice for the drama to go our way and not have to endure – at worst – a disappointing loss and – at best – another inning or more of drama.

And, also, give me a game that ends on a spectacular piece of defense over a walk-off homer any day of the week.

2. In regards to today’s game, I missed the first inning and a half and, as such, missed pretty much everything that happened in the game. I missed Ozzie getting tossed, I missed Buehrle’s early struggles that led to the 3-run homer and I came back just in time to watch 5 innings that were, essentially, a pitcher’s duel. (And, due to a ridiculous lack of sleep lately, I may or may not have fallen asleep about 2 batters before Jesse Crain came in. Sad for me, since I have really enjoyed watching him pitch lately and would have liked to see it.) And, sadly, there was nothing more to be done and, aside from a single RBI courtesy of Adam Dunn, there really wasn’t any more action. From either side.

There were a few times where we left runners in scoring position (the time with the bases loaded was particularly painful), and yeah, the offense could be better those times. But, there was something remarkable about tonight’s loss. We didn’t win, which is disappointing, but we didn’t really have an active role in giving the game away. To me, anyway, it just felt like a normal, run-of-the-mill, every day loss and not like another team crushed us and then wiped the floor with us afterwards.

And, honestly? Today’s type of losses aren’t nearly as painful to me. It happens sometimes. You win some, you lose some. And, hopefuly we’ll do better tomorrow.

3. It’s snowing in Minnesota and they’re postponed in Chicago? And, I thought the recent weather in Chicago was going to be the last time I saw the players bundled up on the field. That’s nuts.

I think *everyone* is going to be happy when April is over.

Twice in a row?! That’s unheard of! Or: BRENT LILLIBRIDGE DESERVES CAPITAL LETTERS TODAY.

1. Gavin Floyd. My faith in him was rewarded tonight. Again. Rock steady. Love it.

2. Oh, Matt Thornton… I don’t want to cringe every time they call you out of the bullpen. I know you’re probably not pleased about how things are going lately either, but please stop breaking my heart, yeah?

3. Speaking of closers, nice to see Santos out there again- though I suppose no small part was due to his defense, this time around. Even if AJ has to throw himself in front of a rather large percentage of his pitches, its another save for the books. Maybe by the middle of June we will no longer lead the AL in blown saves.

4. There were no commercials on the broadcast I was watching tonight (not sure why) so I got to see a lot of the White Sox dugout during commercials. The cameramen LOVED Gavin Floyd. And, also, AJ Pierzynski’s hair manages to stay remarkably spiked in spite of his batting helmet and his catcher’s mask. It’s really rather amazing.

lillibridge.jpg5. Can we give the save to Brent Lillibridge? Anyone who has been listening to me on twitter lately (and, a little bit here) has had to suffer through 2 weeks of me complaining about the lack of giving Lillibridge a chance in the OF. And, tonight he came through in a big way. TWICE. I unofficially give him the save – I don’t care that he’s not a pitcher. So, instead, I will give him a gold star. It’s almost as good, I’m sure.

goldstar-award.jpg
I am going to dedicate an entire post to his display of defensive brilliance if mlb.com ever posts that footage because that was truly awesome. Rodriguez and Cano. A one-two punch that completely saved the game (and he whipped that first catch back to – I think -1B accurately, even after smashing into the wall). I will personally sew him a cape of his own if he keeps that up.

6. And, ps: everyone should go [here] and vote for the All-Star game. And, might I suggest that if you are aren’t attached a particular SS/2B/3B, I think you should write in for Omar Vizquel. Because I would love to see him there and I think he should have been on the voting list – but, then again, I am biased. And, clearly, it is all about me.

I’m starting to get used to this. Or: Nothing new to say here.

Well, unfortunately I don’t have much new to say after today’s loss to the Rays. The score was 2-1, but I don’t know that it was even that close.

Phenomenal job today by James Shields. Good, sharp game. And, a really charming interview at the close of the game. A solid complete game that took him over 1000 career innings. Well done. There’s nothing to be done but to applaud his effort today.

Not a bad outing by Danks, we’ve certainly seen worse lately, but there was just the same usual problems plaguing us tonight. Some questionable defense, some less-than-desiable offense, and just a general feeling that there is just something missing that is preventing this team from feeling like a cohesive unit. Sometimes, it just seems like 9 guys hanging out in the grass. There was actually a really great running and sliding catch where I was actually surprised that Rios and Pierre didn’t smash into each other. And, it’s disappointing that the defense has me feeling this way.

I would love them to win, but I don’t even really need that. I would just like them not to give things away. Even games where we lose can be fun to watch, if they’re good, quality ball.

Oh well. In an effort to be positive, I would like to point out that there was one bright spot tonight.
jesse crain.jpg“Hello, my name is Jesse Crain and I will be auditioning for the role of closer.”

Two good outings in the last three games. I’ll use that to fill up my glass a little and try to keep it half full.

And the heavens opened up. Or: Even Mother Nature is trying to drive me crazy.

If the drama isn’t coming from the bullpen, it’s coming from the skies.

Of course, just as we finish the fifth (with the boys down by 3), they call for the tarp. It looks like we’re headed into a rain delay at the end of just enough baseball to make the game official.

And, then they take so long getting the tarp that the rain lets up and we play almost another half of an inning. And, the rain starts to pour down again.

2 outs, Halos on first and third and they pull the tarp out for real this time. Looks like the Angels are going to be the team that breaks .600 by the morning.

All of this stress is almost enough to make someone want to defect to the National League.

Seriously, all I want for Christmas is an easy nine innings. No extra innings, no acts of weather, and no nuclear meltdowns in the bullpen. That’s it. (And, maybe a few more amazing grabs like the one JP had when he stole the homer from Abreu in the 5th.) Unfortunately for me, it’s not December.

Watching the entire 9th inning from behind my hands. Or: Can I get off this emotional rollercoaster now?

I know we’re approximately 5 minutes into the regular season, but if the Sox keep doing this to me, I’m going to need an extra-large container of Tums and a handful of valium if I’m ever going to make it past the 8th inning.

Tonight hurt, being so close in so many ways that you could practically taste it. I’ll commend the A’s on a job well done (to make particular mention of the save by Fuentes), but man, this one stung.

But, to digress from the Sox for a moment, what up with Tampa @ Boston tonight?

Fuld, who came to the Rays from the Cubs in the Matt Garza trade, hails from Durham, N.H., and grew up watching Red Sox baseball. By his own estimation, he figured he had seen 40 to 50 games at Fenway Park. Monday night’s game proved to be his first as a Major Leaguer at the historic field, and approximately 30 family members and friends were on hand to watch. They were treated to a performance in which he displayed why he has become an emerging force for the Rays.

… Fuld, who made an extraordinary diving catch Saturday against the White Sox, repeated the feat in the fifth when Dustin Pedroia hit a drive to the gap in left-center field. Fuld raced to the ball and dove at the last second to rob Pedroia of extra bases.

Fuld tripled to lead off the sixth, leaving him a single shy of the cycle. After he flew out in the seventh, he had one final at-bat in the ninth and he appeared to notch the final piece to the puzzle. He lined a ball into left field, but he didn’t stop at first and finished with a stand-up double.

This guy is trying really hard to stay on my radar right now and I have to say, my interest is piqued. It’s got to be an exciting night to be a Tampa Bay fan.

And, to make matters worse, I’m pretty sure my brother is going to be able to rub a Jays’ win in my face by the time morning rolls around.

(In reality, I’m only mildly kidding about that. I will have to discuss my historic love affair with the Jays some other time, but that doesn’t mean its any easier to swallow coming off the night at The Cell.)

Well, at least some of us are having a good night. I’m hoping tomorrow’s my turn!

Holy drama, batman! Or: We all knew this was coming.

So, what to say about the Rays/ChiSox today?

Well, it was all Chicago all the time until Sam Fuld decided (again) to show his teammates, his management, and pretty much everyone else in the world of MLB what he’s worth. A double which had him on base an in position to score, putting the Rays on the board (6-1). Really, the only hiccup in Gavin Floyd’s day was his throwing error (though, I would have to argue that he wasn’t alone in that one) that allowed Fuld to score.

And, then comes the drama. The score was (very briefly) 6-2 until the call on Johnson was reversed and his RBI (bringing Damon across home plate) didn’t count.

And, then Maddon got mad. Pun intended. He was pissed. He came out of the dugout red-faced and hand-waving in the familiar way. My lip-reading skills are amateur at best, but I saw an awful lot of bullsh*t getting thrown around in amongst the general flailing. I think he knew from the time he marched onto the field that he was going to yell until he got himself tossed from the game. It was a close call, an arguably an important one, so the dramatics weren’t unexpected.

But, I can’t help but wonder if at least 50% of Maddon’s ranting was letting out 7 games worth of frustration in a public venue. It’s been a rough start for them, really, and who could blame him? Unfortunately, it didn’t help his boys today.

However, aside from that aforementioned throwing error, this guy was having a pretty great day (and getting a reasonable amount of exercise, running back and forth to first):

Way to go, Gavin Floyd.

Credit where credit is due, Or: Wow.

It’s a lot easier for me to be complimentary about someone on the opposing team when the sox still came out with the W against Tampa today.

I’m new, so I doubt there is anyone reading this, but just for the record, I have a deep abiding love of the outfield – especially right outfielders – and sometimes people like to give me heat for it.

But, come on. There are almost no words for how awesome this was, no matter which team you were pulling for today and whether you, like me, love the outfielders or really couldn’t care less.

Day late and a dollar short… Or: Better late than never.

Well, by only starting this blog last night, I missed the start to the season and was a day late for the home opener and I arrived just in time to start blogging for the April 8 game v. Tampa.

Seriously???  Awesome timing. Really.

In a blackout area, I had to follow the game (again) at mlb.com, scoresline.com and via SMS on my cellphone. Not cool, people, not cool.

It’s much easier to watch highlights and lowlights and keep up with the action when my cellphone doesn’t blow up in the top of the ninth with all of the wrong kind of action.

Break my heart, why don’t you?

Let’s take a moment and focus on the good, yeah?

Love your outfielders, people.

And, today is a new day.
